9. Sustainable Livelihood for the oppressed Dalits


Project Area:    Thiruvaiyaru Union – 13 villages             Thiruvaiyaru
                          Budalur Union – 5 villages.                         Taluk.

Target People: The oppressed Dalits – women and Agri labourers.

Objectives:
*       To prevent large scale migration of men.
*       To strive for alternative and sustainable, local specific livelihood.
*       To conscientize people on the constitutional rights and privileges to the Dalit landless and women.
*       To sensitize the target people on alcoholism, hygiene, HIV/AIDs and family breakdown.

Project Activities:

*      Counselling Centre is being conducted regularly, on 4th Saturday of every month, by Fr. Thomas Sahayaraj and he extends his services to persons of psychological problems, addiction cases of the project area.

*      Empowered by the Training content, target people are regular in attending and letting their voices heard in Grama Sabha Meetings.

*      People participate in 100 days work, SGRY Programme and benefit with income, in their own village itself.

*      Through group inter-lending method, people are engaged in animal and goat rearing which gives regular additional income.

*      For Government Welfare schemes and special facilities such as Katcha House, old age pension, Government identity and ration cards are being received.

*      Migration of people from the target area is considerably reduced in the project area.

*      Established networking relationship with like minded NGOs.

*      On 13.04.2009, awareness cum cultural programme on the theme of sustainable livelihood was conducted in Naducauvery, in which more than 100 persons attended.

*      On 16.03.2010, Rally and Meeting on World Women’s Day was celebrated in Thiruvaiyaru, stressing women’s quota in Government services.  All India Radio News Reader Thirumathi Christy Subhatra and Mrs. Manikumari, College Lecturer of Thiruvaiyaru, gave special address to the gathering of 750 women. 

*      On 25.09.2009, awareness, rally cum meeting was organized about Global warming and 180 tree seedlings were planted in Thiruvaiyaru.

*      Health camp was conducted on 12.12.2009 in counselling centre of the project and special awareness meeting was organized on de-addiction.  From 20 villages 99 persons availed themselves of their service.  Secretary and Asst. Secretary participated in the meeting.

*      On 06.06.2009, Environment awareness seminar was organized in Punalvasal.  The District Coordinator of Environment Centre delivered special address to more than 60 women.

*      16 groups of the project area availed themselves of a bank loans (Rs.9,50,000), for their income generation.  45 persons purchased Milch- animals, 24 persons invested in Agriculture, 20 persons repaired their houses, 1 person bought sewing machine, 1 person joined in ITI and 7 persons are self employed.
