3. Community Based Rehabilitation for Disabled

(Vth Phase)

Project Duration: April 2009 to March 2011

Project Location: 30 Panchayats in Thiruvidaimarudur Block.

Goal: Towards fostering and sustaining equality, dignity and rights for the disabled.

Objectives:
ï  To build awareness on disability.
ï  To develop leadership skills.
ï  To train parents of the disabled on rehabilitation.
ï  To empower the groups of disabled persons.
ï  To establish advocacy, lobbying and network.

Activities carried out:
·         9 Children were enrolled under Sponsorship scheme of KMSSS and benefiting.

·         Under Nirmaya Insurance Scheme 150 children with Cerebral Palsy were enrolled and registered.

·         On 22nd June, 2009 Federation office bearers were elected.

·         In the medical camp conducted on September 25, 2009, 50 persons received I.D. cards, 156 disabled received Social Welfare Board cards and 34 persons received tricycles.

·         In the Medical camp on 10.12.2009, at Thiruvidaimarudur 109 persons received ID, 64 persons received welfare card.  In this camp District Rehabilitation Officer and Block development Officer gave their valuable service were present.

·         On November 7, 2009 the District Rehabilitation Officer participated in welfare camp and 88 persons were given welfare card.

·         Representing KMSSS, 156 persons participated in a rally held on 23.11.2009 at Railway Station, Thanjavur and submitted application to the District Collector, demanding a 20 point programme of disabled persons.

·         Exclusively a camp for surgical intervention was conducted on 05.01.2010, in which 116 persons turned up for check up and 6 persons were provided with the service of surgery.

Special Functions and Events:

ï  Independence Day and Republic day functions were conducted in the Day Care Centre of the project, in which disabled persons, community leaders, KMSSS Secretaries and Lions Club President participated.

ï  The world disability day was organized on 07.12.2009, when Rally, competition and special meeting were conducted.  Kumbakonam Diocesan Bishop, Vicar General, DRO, District Panchayat Council Member Thiru. K. Anbalagan, Medical Officer Dr. Chandrasekar, Thasildar, Advocate and Easwar School Founder Mr. Jayapaul took part role and graced the special occasion.

ï  Community Pongal was organized in Govindapuram on 13.01.2010.

Supply of Aids and Appliances:

As part of rehabilitation, Aids and Appliances were supplied to disabled persons.
ó  Tricycle to 20 persons
ó  Hearing Aid to 13 persons
ó  Calipers to 2 persons
ó  Wheel chairs to 5 persons
ó  Crutches to 4 persons
ó  Artificial limbs to 2 persons
ó  Line House to 2 persons

For 42 cerebral disability persons monthly assistance were provided.

Union Level (Block Level) Trainings programmes contents on Managerial skills, Documentation, laws and Rights, Self Help process, Economic Development, Disability prevention were given priority.

Networking relationFederation people from Pondicherry Social Service Society visited our area on 20.04.2009 and discussed with clients and appreciated the approaches and achievements of the programmes.

Federation team of the KMSSS gave a cultural programme to the Disabled School Children and old age Home inmates in Velankanni on 21st & 22nd August, 2009.  “CBR Forum” Coordinator Mr. Dominic visited our project on November 3 & 4, 2009 and encouraged the staff and disabled persons.

Revolving Fund & Resource Mobilization:

Six (6) Disabled groups and 4 individual members received Rs.4,25,000/- as revolving fund from Government Assistance.  12 Disabled Groups benefited from People’s Bank to a tune of Rs.2,75,000/-.  Utilizing these resources the disabled are engaged in various income generation activities or field of work
